The overall objective of the program is to develop knowledge, tools and technologies for environmental beneficial oil spill response strategies for ice-covered waters.
The program will
improve our ability to protect the Arctic environment against oil spills
give improved basis for decision-making and
enhance the state-of-the-art in Arctic oil spill response
The program was initiated in September 2006 after a comprehensive preparation phase and it will last until end of 2009. The program covers R&D areas as;
Mechanical recovery
Use of dispersants
Burning of oil spills
Remote sensing and
Numerical modelling
Laboratory and field testing of tools and methods is an important part of the program.

The JIP Oil-in-ice program was finalized in 2009 and further work will be conducted in follow up programs and projects.
