JIP Oil in Ice

Uncontained in-situ burning using chemical herders during field trial utside Svalbard May 2008 Weatherig experiments with different ice conditions were performed inside the tent due to the very low temperature (-25 to -35C). Svea April 2008.
Mechanical recovery of oil in ice with prototype skimmer during field experimenr outside Svalbard May 2008

After three days of weathering the oil spill were made ready for in-situ burning in the burning chamber. Svea April 2008.

The overall objective of the program is to develop knowledge,  tools and technologies for environmental beneficial oil spill response strategies for ice-covered waters.

The program will

  • improve our ability to protect the Arctic environment against oil spills
  • give improved basis for decision-making and
  • enhance the state-of-the-art in Arctic oil spill response

The program was initiated in September 2006 after a comprehensive preparation phase and it will last until end of 2009. The program covers R&D areas as;

  • Mechanical recovery
  • Use of dispersants
  • Burning of oil spills
  • Remote sensing and
  • Numerical modelling

Laboratory and field testing of tools and methods is an important part of the program.
