Climate Stress Laboratories

A climate-adapted building is planned, designed, and constructed to withstand various types of external climate stress. In our laboratories, we can test the building elements' resistance to precipitation, snow load, wind, solar radiation, temperature, and flood water throughout its intended life.

Climate change makes buildings and building elements more vulnerable, especially to moisture stress. The built environment has an expected lifespan of around 60 to over 100 years. Therefore, we must consider the increased climate impact for the products we develop today.

The climate in Norway is extremely varied, and every year this leads to extensive damage to the built environment. The service life of materials and constructions depends on the local climatic conditions.

The relationship between the properties of materials, the operation of structures, the design and geographical location of buildings, and the climatic stresses to which they are exposed is very complex.

New and improved methods for assessing risks associated with possible effects of changes in local climate conditions are necessary for the early implementation of effective climate adaptation measures.

Our Laboratories

Building Construction Laboratory

Building Construction Laboratory

The main focus of this laboratory is large-scale testing on the climate screen. We can document, develop, and research building materials, components, and entire building components used in energy-efficient buildings that must withstand climate loads...

Cement and Paste Laboratory

Cement and Paste Laboratory

We test cement, paste, binders, and mortars on a small scale. In addition, we can assist with control tests and development projects for new materials or research support.

Concrete laboratories

Concrete laboratories

Our laboratories have the equipment and qualified personnel to perform a wide range of standard tests on concrete. We also have extensive experience in developing tailor-made test methods for unique solutions. Concrete is the most widely used...

Full-scale surface water system Høvringen

Full-scale surface water system Høvringen

The experimental field at Høvringen outside Trondheim has a meteorological measuring station that measures temperature, wind, and precipitation and an advanced system for measuring the amount of water flowing into the drains.

Material Laboratory

Material Laboratory

In the Material laboratory, we test material and functional properties on building products, mainly for use in barrier layers in building structures.

ZEB Laboratory

ZEB Laboratory

The ZEB laboratory is a laboratory for zero-emission buildings (ZEB). In this arena, new and innovative materials and solutions are developed, investigated, tested, and demonstrated in mutual interaction with humans.

ZEB living lab

ZEB living lab

ZEB Living Lab - the living laboratory - is a research infrastructure at NTNU and SINTEF.
