Enabling Real-Time Privacy-Awareness of Smart City Providers and Users

Smart city services are very dynamic with respect to how they are used and by whom, what technology they are based on, how they manage the data etc. For a citizen, privacy represents a condition for his/her trust and service adoption. Enabling of citizens to reason about privacy of the services which are highly dynamic requires real-time assessment. It is also essential for a provider to be able to evaluate and manage privacy over time. This project will develop a practically useful tool-based method for privacy-awareness of smart-city solutions.

Our overall goal is to enable both real-time assessment of privacy, as well as long-term privacy validation and management.

Research

PrivacyAssessment@SmartCity will develop new knowledge related to the following research questions:

  • How can we identify and manage privacy risks in smart city solutions? What privacy-relevant requirements should be posed to the smart city solutions, providers and customers?
  • How can privacy-awareness of smart city solutions be evaluated and validated in real-time? What kind of methods and decision support is needed for this?
  • How can we develop useful and pragmatic principles/guidance for privacy management of the smart city solutions?

News and activities

  • June 2017: A presentation of our paper entitled "Privacy Scorecard – Refined Design and Results of a Trial on a Mobility as a Service Example" (Omerovic, A., Natvig, M., Tardy, I.) was given by Aida Omerovic at 27th European Safety and Reliability Association Conference ( ESREL'17 ) on June 20th 2017 in Portoroz, Slovenia. The paper is also published in the proceedings of ESREL 2017 conference.
  • June 2017: A presentation entitled "Hvordan ivareta personvern i smart city-løsninger" was given by Marit Natvig and Aida Omerovic at "Mobilitetskonferansen - Smart transport i bærekraftige byer" arranged by ITS Norge and Tekna, Gardermoen on June 13. 2017.
  • June 2017: A presentation entitled "Hva er cloud og virtualisering? Og hvorfor trenger vi det?" was given by Isabelle Tardy at a semimnar arranged by Mobil Agenda, Oslo on June 6. 2017.

  • April 2017: A paper entitled "Towards Transparent Real-Time Privacy Risk Assessment of Intelligent Transport Systems" (Erdogan, G., Omerovic, A., Natvig, M, Tardy, I.) has been published in the proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Risk Assessment and Risk-driven Quality Assurance, RISK 2016, Held in Conjunction with ICTSS 2016, Graz, Austria, October 18, 2016.

  • April 2017: The chronicle Guide to good smart city life written by Marit Kjøsnes Natvig, Aida Omerovic, and Isabelle Tardy is published in Dagens Næringsliv and Gemini.
  • April 2017: A presentation of our work on Privacy management in Smart Cities was given by Aida Omerovic and Marit Natvig at "ARK'17 – Arkitektur som understøtte digitalisering" (Oslo)
    on April 27. 2017.
  • January 2017: A paper entitled "Privacy Scorecard – Refined Design and Results of a Trial on a Mobility as a Service Example" (Omerovic, A., Natvig, M., Tardy, I.) has been accepted for publication in the proceedings of the 27th European Safety and Reliability Association Conference (ESREL) 2017.
  • December 2016: A paper entitled "Towards a Privacy Scorecard – Initial Design Exemplified on an Intelligent Transport Systems Service" (Omerovic, A., Natvig, M., Tardy, I.) has been accepted for publication in the proceedings of Third International Conference on Information Systems Security and Privacy (ICISSP) 2017.
  • December 2016: A technical report entitled "Needs and challenges concerning privacy risk management within Intelligent Transport Systems – Problem analysis in project PrivacyAssessment@SmartCity" (Erdogan, G., Omerovic, A., Natvig, M., Tardy, I.) is published.
  • November 2016: On November 9, Aida Omerovic presented Transparent real-time monitoring of privacy at the public seminar Cybersecurity and privacy -- Hand in hand or each on their own? organized by SINTEF.
  • October 2016: On 18 October 2016 Gencer Erdogan presented the paper Towards Transparent Real-Time Privacy Risk Assessment of Intelligent Transport Systems authored by Gencer Erdogan, Aida Omerovic, Marit Natvig and Isabelle C.R. Tardy. The paper was presented at the 4th International Workshop on Risk Assessment and Risk-driven Quality Assurance (RISK'16) held in conjunction with the 28th International Conference on Testing Software and Systems (ICTSS'16).
  • June 2016: Marit Natvig presented Privacy in Smart Societies in a public seminar held by SINTEF about privacy in our cyberspace-based society.
  • May 2016: ITS Norway and SINTEF is holding a workhop related to privacy in the context of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The workshop is open to public and will be held on May 4 at Dronning Maudsgt 15, Oslo. Time: 08:30-15:30. The presentations are available (in Norwegian) below:
  • March - April 2016: We are interviewing some of the main actors within the ITS domain, on their experiences and needs related to privacy handling.
  • January - March 2016: Case study on privacy in intelligent transport systems.
  • January 2016: PrivacyAssessment@SmartCity Kick-off.
