Hydrocarbon migration modelling
SINTEF’s in-house basin modelling simulator SEMI is a 3D map-based simulator which models migration and entrapment of oil and gas from source rocks to traps on geological time scales.

Thereby, it provides explorationists with quantitative estimates of the amounts of hydrocarbon in (undrilled) traps, and the most likely phases to expect in these traps. In order to achieve this, SEMI has built in functions for simulating the generation and expulsion of oil and gas from source rocks and the migration and entrapment within carrier rocks. SEMI also models the processes that cause hydrocarbons to migrate out of traps (including capillary leakage and hydraulic leakage).
