In this project we will describe the possibility that inorganic nutrients may be absorbed by kelp, and examine whether particles from salmon farming can be a resource for growth of mussels. In addition we will describe the production potential and a concept for IMTA in Norway.
Joining us on the team we have research groups in Canada (University OFI New Brunswick and Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Halifax), Chile (University of Los Lagos), China (Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute), the Netherlands (Wageningen UR) and Brazil (University of Santa Catarina).
Integrated aquaculture to reduce emissions
The Norwegian Research Council recently gave funding to the 3-year project EXPLOIT, in which SINTEF together with NTNU, HI and Bellona will examine the possible utilization of nutrients from fish farming. In IMTA, the waste from fish farming is utilized to the growth of other species, such as kelp and mussels.
