Digital technologies are creating many opportunities for the industry, but how can you ensure that you take advantage of these opportunities in practice? Researchers examine how and why in the new book “Digitalization and Sustainable Manufacturing – Twin Transition in Norway”.

“Digital technologies and tools are opening up a wealth of opportunities for the industry, but it’s easy to get lost in the complex landscape. To achieve the goals of greater environmental, economic and human sustainability, engineers, scientists and industry leaders must make strategic choices when it comes to technology,” says Sverre Gulbrandsen-Dahl. He is chief scientist and centre manager for SFI Manufacturing at SINTEF.

The industry is facing major changes, driven by digitalisation and sustainability, also known as “twin transition”. Digital technologies are presenting the industry with new opportunities to boost productivity, better leverage resources and create new solutions across manufacturing and supply chains.

The new book describes how global goods manufacturing is being driven forward by artificial intelligence, flexible automation and the use of digital twins, in addition to effective interaction between humans and technology. At the same time, it points out how digitalisation also increases complexity.

The book also provides a glimpse of the collaboration, activity and depth of research taking place at the SFI Manufacturing centre, highlighting cases, reflections and best practice from the industry.

“It will be of particular interest to industrialists and researchers in sustainable manufacturing, as well as decision-makers in business and management,” says Gulbrandsen-Dahl.
