Through the EU project INSECTEC.OCEAN, SINTEF Ocean will assist the Portuguese INESC TEC in establishing a 'Centre of Excellence' for marine research and engineering in Porto, Portugal.

"We are very proud that INESC TEC has chosen us as a partner in this large and comprehensive project. They have high ambitions and goals to establish a sustainable 'centre of excellence' within the next six years, where we will provide advice and expertise on how to succeed with everything from the development and operation of infrastructure, to research activities that meet the needs of industry and society," says special advisor at SINTEF Ocean, Beate Kvamstad-Lervold.

The project will run for six years until 2031 and is led by the Portuguese research institute INESC TEC. The EU grant is €15 million.

The goal is to promote research-based innovation by connecting industry and research sectors in four main areas:

  • Marine structures
  • Marine robotics
  • Ocean energy
  • Ocean data

In connection with the kick-off meeting in Porto, SINTEF Ocean also signed a cooperation agreement with INESC TEC on research and development in the marine sector.

"International cooperation has always been important for SINTEF Ocean, and this has not become less important as the world has developed, with greater global uncertainty, a Europe that needs to increase productivity and competitiveness, while ensuring sustainable management of the ocean and nature. We are therefore very pleased that the EU has chosen to fund this project, so that we can strengthen our cooperation with INESC TEC," adds research director Arne Fredheim.
