SINTEF and NTNU are key partners to the company Aker Clean Carbon, which has worked actively with the development of new technology for CO2 capture in recent years.
Aker has decided to build what could become the world's first and largest carbon capture facility of its kind. This will be located in connection with the power plant on Kårstø in Norway and should be able to catch 100,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. The investments are estimated at around NOK 725 million.
SINTEF, NTNU and Aker Clean Carbon signed In August 2008 an agreement on an eight-year research and development program - SOLVit. The purpose of the program is to make CO2 handling more reasonable. The limit of the budget is NOK 317 million. Gassnova - the state enterprise for CO2 handling - has pledged 34 million in funding for the project's first phase, which which was completed in February 2011. Phase two of the project was started in March 2011 and will be completed in December 2012.
