The Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA Norway) has taken a strong interest in safety barriers and safety barrier management for the last years, in particular related to identifying and incorporating operational and organisational barrier elements (in addition to the technical ones) in order to take a complete view on the safety barriers. The main objective of the "PDS barrier management" project is to provide tools and guidelines to improve barrier management in the petroleum industry.
To fulfil the primary objective of the project, the following secondary objectives will be pursued:
- Develop an overall method for barrier management focusing on the integration of technical, operational and organisational barriers.
- Develop models and data for dependencies between barriers.
- Evaluate how new technology influences barrier performance, in particular how wireless technology used for safety systems influences the barrier performance.
- Develop a practical industry guideline for overall barrier management including technical and operational barrier elements for all relevant lifecycle phases
Publication of the project results in journals, at conferences and seminars
Kongsberg Maritime has, on behalf of the PDS forum, received funds from the Research Council of Norway to carry out an innovation project called "Tools and guidelines for overall barrier management and reduction of major accident risk in the petroleum industry”. Executing research partner is mainly SINTEF with the participation from the members of the PDS forum.
