Carbon capture, transport and storage (CCS) is a technology that prevents large amounts of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels entering the atmosphere. CCS is the third most important measure to limit global warming by two degrees according to the International Energy Agency.
CCS is not profitable under the current energy regime, and will depend on the regulatory framework, incentives and the future cost of emissions. This is what the GATEWAY project will address.
In the GATEWAY project we will:
- Develop a Pilot case for European CO2 transport infrastructure
- Provide a model for establishing European CO2 transport infrastructure
- Define a Project of Common Interest
- Develop a business case for the Pilot Case
- Address the risk associated with the Pilot Case and propose measures for de-risking incorporating
- Assess the funding needs and propose possible financing mechanisms for the Pilot Case
