The report describes the status and expected development of several hydrogen-related technologies from the perspective of a Norwegian county with a relatively large degree of urbanisation, and provides suggestions for how Akershus county can best support their deployment.
While the most significant development in hydrogen technology are in the field of cars, Norway has seen an explosion in the sale and usage of battery vehicles: we suggested therefore to focus on those areas where hydrogen has the greatest advantage over batteries, such as taxis, forklifts and material handling in Gardermoen airport.
In the longer term, we recommended following up on the development of hydrogen trucks, delivery vehicles, ferries, and larger ships. Hydrogen trains are considered less relevant for Akershus county, since most of their lines are electrified with catenaries already.
As a strategy for an economically sustainable development of a network of hydrogen stations, we recommended pursuing agreements with logistic companies that could make immediate use of a medium or large fleet of hydrogen forklifts, who could then make their private hydrogen station available to the public at set conditions in exchange for some form of financial support.
