SIP GUT: Development of tools for gut microbiota research

The gut microbiota are the microorganisms that live in the gastrointestinal tract. They play a fundamental role in health and disease of the host. Detailed understanding of gut microbiota–host interactions is therefore of great importance as this may be used to find new treatments to various diseases and increase the well-being of humans and animals.

The gut microbiota market (health, food and feed industry) is rapidly expanding and expected to grow at a very fast pace in the coming years due to factors such as increased focus on microbiota therapies and increased occurrence of lifestyle diseases. However, understanding how the gut microbiota affects human and animal health is extremely challenging. There is hence a vast need for both competence and capacity within gut microbiota research to start filling important technology and knowledge gaps.

With this project we want to respond to that need. SINTEF already has unique competence and infrastructure in a range of the technology components needed to fill the gaps. Hence, the aim is to provide a solid basis for establishment of a complete toolbox within selected areas of gut microbiota research to support national and international research activity.

SIP GUT is a 3.5-year Strategic Institute Project (SIP) financed by SINTEF Industry. The project is led by the Department of Biotechnology and Nanomedicine at SINTEF Industry.
