Knowledge base for suicide prevention in Vestland County Council

The overall aim of the project has been to provide Vestland County Council with a knowledge-base on suicide prevention, which will form the basis for the county council's further development of interventions aimed at specific groups in the county.

The knowledge base contains the following three main elements, which also form the structure of the research report:

  1. Statistics on how many, and who (cf. background variables below) commit suicide in Vestland, compared with other counties. Background variables used in the analyses are gender, age, education, occupational group, socio-economic status (income), civil status, geographical area and method of suicide.
  2. Qualitative analyses of national knowledge about trends and "dark numbers".
  3. Overview of regional and municipal measures that have proven effective in suicide prevention. Of particular interest is the link to arenas where the county council has means of action.

Both individual level register data, data from municipal mental health and substance abuse work, as well as interviews, workshops and a literature review of Norwegian and international literature have been used to answer the research questions in the project.
