EDGAR - EGNSS Dual-Frequency/Multi-Constellation for GBAS Based Operations

EDGAR – an EU initiative for more efficient and sustainable air traffic. The goal of the EDGAR project is to evolve and validate the DFMC GBAS solution with emphasis on providing safety, availability, and robustness in challenging operational conditions.

EGNSS DFMC for GBAS based operations (EDGAR) is an initiative aimed at contributing towards the development of an improved, more reliable, and accurate GBAS solution that responds, on the one hand, to the increasing demand for enhanced approach and all-weather operations in the ever-growing volume of air operations; and on the other hand, to sustainability requirements towards the compliance with EU Green Deal objectives.

SINTEF’s core contributions to the EDGAR project are on robustness of the system in the presence of GNSS RFI and ionospheric scintillation. With regard to GNSS RFI, performance of MFDC GNSS receivers is being characterized using simulations based on synthesis of representative RFI events captured as part of a multi-year multi-nation monitoring campaign carried out within now finalized ESA NAVISP program funded ARFIDAAS project.

Analysis results will be used to provide recommendations to the architecture of the RFI monitoring setup in a DFMC concept realization. The aspect of ionospheric scintillation is addressed by monitor design for ground reference receivers and its validation using representative data (i.e. data captured at the Tenerife Norte airport, Ishigaki airport, and/or State University of Sao Paulo (UNESP) campus).
