EssPort – Energy Storage Sharing in Ports

The energy systems for industrial processes and transport systems in ports are becoming increasingly complex and interdependent.

Background:

Electrification of these systems requires significant power, and there is often a lack of available grid capacity. To better utilise the available grid capacity and locally produced energy, a more coordinated control of the various loads is necessary, which can become very complex. A shared battery system, as a "passive component," can help reduce this complexity and increase the flexibility in the area. Shared usage of a battery system requires coordination through a "value stacking platform" that can allocate the different energy storage services. As a result, the battery system can also realise a significantly improved profitability of the installation, which is currently one of the biggest barriers to implementing such solutions.

Objective:

The goal of the EssPort project is to develop a "value stacking platform" for a battery system that, in combination with smart operational planning of shore power and other consumption in a port area (e.g. smart control of reefer containers and charging of ships or other vehicles), can better utilise the available grid capacity. This is expected to improve profitability and optimise the use of the energy storage system, as costs can be distributed among all recipients of the energy storage services. Facilitating cost-effective energy storage services can accelerate the electrification of both ports and society in general, as it will enable greater integration of renewable production and faster connection of new industries and shore power/charging facilities. This will be achieved in the project through the development of:

  • A "value stacking platform" for battery systems
  • A planning and monitoring system for shore power
  • Flexible battery containers that can offer multiple services
