Abstract
SINTEF has conducted a re-check of Njord crude oil to verify the weathering studies from 2002, and to identify needs for updating the weathering properties. No weathering study has previously been performed on Hyme crude oil. A study, equivalent to a re-check, was conducted to compare the laboratory data with the re-check data obtained on Njord 2013. Based on the obtained data, and compared with the previous study, SINTEF recommends:• No new weathering study of the Njord crude oil, though the density and the viscosity are somewhat lower than in 2002. In addition, Njord 2013 showed a higher evaporation than the 2002 sample. The data from 2002 weathering study is therefore considered to form a conservative basis for Njord 2013.• The obtained data on Hyme are not significantly different from Njord 2013; though the formed Hyme emulsions are very unstable compared with the Njord 2013 emulsions. Hyme would therefor possibly have a shorter lifetime at sea than Njord 2013. The weathering study of Njord 2002 can be used as a conservative basis for Hyme. However, a weathering study of Hyme may possibly predict more realistic behaviour at sea.
