Abstract
The aim of this paper is to study how to identify numerical problems causing artificial heat generation in the Altair HyperXtrude FEM software. This software has been used to model the three dimensional transient problem of hot aluminum extrusion in order to study the flow balance and temperature distribution in the aluminum. The results show a very high sensitivity to mesh resolution in the billet. Divergence, rather than convergence of the solution with increasing mesh refinement indicates that HyperXtrude could have a problem.
