Abstract
Oil filled terminations for high voltage XLPE cables (> 36 kV) have been used for more than four decades in Norway. The service experience is generally very good. However, some severefaults have occurred. The causes of several of these faults have been surveyed and the main results will be presented in this paper. One of the most common observed failures is due to water ingress into the oil-filled silicone housings. Therefore, reliable methods for detecting moisture during maintenance of the cable terminations have been examined and in particular the use of relative humidity sensors in silicone oil.
