Structural similarity of the precipitates in the Al-Mg-Si system

Abstract

It is shown how all precipitates in the Al-Mg-Si system are structurally connected through a hexagonal Si-grid. This grid is oriented in a specific way in the Al-matrix, and may be envisioned as a system whereon Mg and Al atoms order. Seen in projection along the hexagonal axis, this Si-backbone network is only slighly different from one precipitate to another.
