Abstract
In order to obtain insight into the hydrodynamic
loadings including steering moment of open thrusters,
numerical investigations and model tests of open
thrusters were performed. Tests were performed under
both positive and negative advance speeds. Azimuth
angles –90 to +90 degrees were investigated. Wireless
transmission was used to minimize data transfer noise.
The objective of the study was to help to understand
the effect of oblique flow (azimuth angle) on
hydrodynamic loadings of open thrusters (as well as
pods) which in turn can improve the design of thrusters
for realistic loads. In addition test results deliver
crucial information required for better management of
different dynamic positioning scenarios.
Numerical methods and experimental test setup are
described. Measurements of propeller thrust and
torque, total thrust, side force and steering moment at
different azimuth angles and at different advance
coefficients are presented and discussed. Numerical
analysis results together with their experimental
verifications are presented and discussed.
