Research group of Applied Geoscience

With our broad expertise on the underground, access to software and laboratories, we deliver knowledge about how liquid flows and pressure propagates in the underground.

Research group of Geophysics

Research group of Geophysics

In geophysics, the main activity is primarily related to seismic processing methods for structural imaging of the subsurface.

Research areas

  • Subsurface characterization for CO2 and Hydrogen storage
  • Energy-efficient oil and gas production
  • Geophysical monitoring of CO2 storage and well integrity / leakage
  • Modelling of pressure in the subsurface
  • Drone surveillance of geohazards
  • Fibre-optic sensors for cost-efficient seismic measurements

Research areas and infrastructure

  • Use of subsurface competence, software and laboratories for oil and gas, but mainly for new applications areas outside oil and gas.
  • Laboratories for studying and monitoring fluids in the subsurface across different scales
    • µCT scanner
    • reservoir laboratory
    • Svelvik CO2 Field Lab
  • Geodrones laboratory with drones and sensors for surface and shallow subsurface characterization and monitoring
  • Development of extensive suite of in-house software

Examples Geophysics:
Seismic and electromagnetic modelling and inversion, combined geophysical inversion / interpretation, tools for uncertainty quantification, value-of-information assessment, and survey optimization.

Examples Reservoir and Geology:
Modelling of the fluid pressure distribution over geological periods of time and up to present day.
