Research group of Materials Integrity and Welding

Vital components and structures are designed and fabricated for long lifetimes. By understanding mechanisms for deterioration of metals, we help our customers make material selections and develop welding procedures, ensuring that catastrophic events do not occur in infrastructures such as bridges, wind turbines, pipelines and cables for energy transport.

Research approach

Photo collage
  • We collaborate with customers, university partners and with many SINTEF research groups.
  • We apply a multi scale and multi-physics approach.
  • We have state-of-art welding facilities.
  • We have mechanical test machines with environmental control.
  • We use digital image correlation and acoustic emission detection monitoring techniques.
  • We have a workshop and laboratories for thermomechanical treatments in a Gleeble simulator, metallographic and fractographic characterization.
  • We access nanomechanical test tools through university (NTNU) collaboration.
  • We use commercial software (Abaqus) for FEM analyses and develop proprietary solvers to obtain added value.
  • We have proprietary softwares for fatigue and fracture mechanics calculations in pipelines and piping structures.

Laboratories

Welding laboratory

Welding laboratory

In the welding laboratory, we perform hyperbaric welding, weldability testing and weld thermal simulations.

Metallographic characterization laboratory

Metallographic characterization laboratory

In the characterization laboratory we have strong expertise in metallographic characterization of steel, aluminum and other metals and alloys. The laboratory is located very close to the mechanical/fracture mechanical laboratory, the corrosion...

Materials testing

Materials testing

We can test and characterise a wide range of different materials in our laboratories. Materials and components are bent, tensioned and compressed, and go through fracture- and fatigue tests.
