Norway and the Nordic region have a varied geology with opportunities to exploit deposits with many minerals necessary for green value chains. Norway is already an important supplier of minerals, and has several mineral deposits that are attracting great interest in Europe. At the same time, the Nordic countries are world leaders in mining technology and the region is a European leader in the production of both minerals and metals. Access to resources, stable political governance, a willingness to regulate and a focus on both innovation and the environment mean that Norway and the other Nordic countries can contribute both production and technology for a greener world in the coming decades. For example, 25% of the world's iron ore is actually produced in the Nordic region, while several of the Nordic countries have some of the world's largest deposits of rare earth elements, critical for green technologies.
By developing the most efficient technologies along the value chain, mapping and capturing our share of the world's extraction of non-renewable mineral resources, we are helping to reduce the world's land and environmental footprint while increasing our own value creation.
SINTEF focuses on convincing society that the minerals and metals industry can provide jobs and growth and that all activities must take account of the environment in the best possible way, as outlined in the Norwegian mineral strategy.
