GENeSYS-MOD is an energy system model that minimizes the cost of investing and operating the whole energy system under decarbonization constraints and given energy demands. It can be used to provide decarbonization pathways, for instance at the European level and towards 2050. The model is a large linear program (LP) covering several sectors (e.g. power, industry, residential, transport) and energy carriers (e.g. electricity, fossils, hydrogen, ammonia). The geographic scale is flexible and can be adapted from a detailed regional description to the whole world.
The model can also be used to have a more detailed look at the operation of a given year to ensure the suitability of the resulting energy system to various operating conditions.
The model was originally developed at TU Berlin based on the open model OSeMOSYS and has been adopted at SINTEF Energy with for instance, a conversion to the Julia programming language.
The model has been used in the H2020 Open ENTRANCE project and model results can be found in D3.2.
