Challenge and objective

  • As the number of distributed energy resources grows, distribution system operators are facing significant challenges in monitoring and controlling their distribution networks. This evolution of the distribution power grid has led to the development of new techniques for monitoring and validating the state of the distribution grid. The challenge we looked into in this work was: How to integrate smart meters data in multiple services of the DSO's control centre.

Work performed

  • Development of a cyber-physical power system in the laboratory.
  • The system uses the information technology, 4G communications, cloud services, DSO's control centre services.

Significant results

  • Created a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test setup for testing new control centre services based on information coming from smart meters.
  • The setup has been used to test topology identification algorithm and validate fidelity of field data used on other services of the control centre.

Impact for distribution system innovation

  • Gained knowledge and understanding on the new techniques for monitoring and controlling the distribution electric power grid.
