Laboratory setup for testing 5G based line protection
Challenge and objective
- Electric Power Systems (EPS) play a key role on the economic development of the countries. A blackout on the electric energy supply due to incorrect operation of protection functions can result in big economic losses. It is important to test new protection techniques and groundbreaking technologies for Electric Power Systems such as 5G communications.
Work performed
- IEC61850 technology has been used for protection and control in power substations.
- Based on local area communications protocols and wide-area communications.
Significant results
- Developed a laboratory setup with Power system line protection technology that uses 5G communications.
- Available to test protection methods of power lines and test inter-substation communications based on 5G.
Impact for distribution system innovation
- The community of engineering students and system operators can get experience new techniques to protect the power system grid at a controlled environment.
- System operators can get new skills for protection based on 5G communications.
