Threat Modelling of Control Architectures
Challenge and objective
- As more Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are introduced into the medium voltage (MV) part of the power grid, the need to control these resources arises.
- This control can be exercised in either a centralized or a distributed fashion, and the challenge is to assess whether either of these approaches are more secure than the other.
Work performed
- Threat modeling of two alternative control architectures has been performed using a novel approach.
Significant results
- Our results indicate that at the current level of detail, it is difficult to draw definitive conclusions as to which architecture is more secure.
Impact for distribution system innovation
- Better understanding of the different security threats that comes as a results of implementing different types of advanced control systems.
