Security of supply in the future power system
Security of electricity supply means the ability of the electricity system to supply end-users with electricity of a certain quality on a continuous basis. The security of supply is composed of four main elements: Energy availability (also termed as ‘energy security’) which is the ability of the power system to cover the energy use, power capacity which is the ability of the power system to cover the instantaneous demand, the voltage quality, i.e., the quality of the supply voltage at the end-user, and the reliability of supply which is the ability of the power system to supply electricity to the end-users, related to frequency and duration of power supply interruptions. The operational reliability, defined as the ability of the power system to withstand sudden disturbances such as short circuits or non-anticipated loss of system components without causing interruptions to end-users, as well as cyber security are also parts of security of electricity supply.
In CINELDI, security of electricity supply has not been a topic of comprehensive research itself. The results in this area mainly cover problem descriptions, definitions [1, 2], identification of how security of supply may be affected by changes in the power system, new operational patterns, climate change imposing new weather-related stress, etc. [1, 2, 3]. Several activities are performed within cybersecurity in smart grids, and results available. Cyber-physical testbeds are established amongst other for studying cyber security issues. A comprehensive literature review is performed of methods and indicators for quantifying the impact of flexibility resources on SoS [4, 5].
