UPM is the largest University for technology in Spain, with nearly 40.000 students, and about 3500 people as teaching and research staff, covering all technical disciplines.

Wind turbine blade under static tests. The blade was instrumented with distributed fiber optic sensors. On the right figure, the strain data for a continuous line, under increasing loads, can be seen. A local buckling was detected at 65% of the limit load. Photo: UPM

UPM is the largest University for technology in Spain, with nearly 40.000 students, and about 3500 people as teaching and research staff, covering all technical disciplines. The UPM researchers have a large expertise in participation in research projects at national and international level. At the 7th Framework Programme, UPM is recognized as the Spanish University with the highest number of approved projects. UPM follows the Recommendations of the European Commission containing the "European Charter for Researchers" and the "Code of Conduct for Recruitment of Researchers", hereby commits, according with its internal policies, to further develop its internal human resources strategy, adhering to the recommendations and the principles set out in the Charter and Code and to guarantee transparency, accessibility, equity, and the pursuit of excellence in the recruitment of researchers. UPM has received the "HR Excellence in Research" award. Further information on the global research activities of UPM may be found at http://www.upm.es/internacional/Researchers

The group of the UPM for this project works at the Laboratory of Composites and Smart Structures, at the Department of Aeronautics. They have been involved in 11 European projects, without interruption since 1996. Its activity has focused on strain monitoring by Fiber Optic Sensors, structural tests, composite materials qualification and damage detection. The group has published over 100 research papers on Structural Health Monitoring, which is a recognized specialisation for this research group.
