The objective is to prepare a generic Oil Spill Contingency Guideline for Arctic and ice covered waters based on the results from this JIP.
The choice of response measures for an oil spill in ice will depend on a number of factors including the ice regime (dense ice, slush ice, low ice concentration etc.) and the presence of different natural resources.
There is a need to prepare a generic guidance to which response measure or combination of response measures should be recommended for different ice regimes (scenarios). Preparation of a generic oil spill contingency plan for Arctic and ice-infested waters based on a set of (5-6) ice regimes will function as a guidance when more specific OSCPs are going to be prepared for specific Arctic areas or oil fields prior to oil activities.
