A lightering operation is a type of Ship-to-Ship (STS) operation that is carried out and controlled by human operators. Decision-support and/or automatic control systems, that can provide adequate courses, speeds and distances during the approach phase between the vessels, should be considered in order to support the human operator in further enhancing the level of safety and efficiency of STS operations. A control strategy is proposed by using a relative distance sensor.
