What is the climate COP?
COP stands for Conference of the Parties. It is the annual summit under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Here, countries negotiate how the world can reach the goals of the Paris Agreement. Research communities, industry, interest organizations, and civil society also take part.
Together with NTNU
NTNU and SINTEF travel to COP as one team. We produce joint expert advice, hold joint events, and share knowledge across disciplines. Norway's largest university and one of Europe's largest independent research institutes together have a good overview of where the technology is mature, where knowledge is still lacking, and what stands in the way of faster implementation.
Our role as RINGO observer
SINTEF is accredited as a RINGO (Research and Independent NGOs). As an observer, we have a three-part role:
- we communicate research that supports the Sustainable Development Goals, both globally and nationally
- we contribute knowledge to the climate negotiators and other actors by sharing status and insights
- we promote research collaboration and sustainable solutions in climate and energy, also with low- and middle-income countries
Our shared goal is to support a knowledge-based transition to a sustainable society, in Norway and internationally.

Our expert advice for COP31
In the brochure COP31 – From ambition to implementation, NTNU and SINTEF present their recommendations for this year's negotiations. The main message is that we know a lot about what needs to be done, and many of the solutions already exist. Now it is about increasing the pace and putting them to use.

Can We Cool Down without Heating the Planet?
Rising global temperatures are increasing the demand for cooling, whether for air conditioning or industrial processes. Yet, the systems that keep us cool can themselves contribute to climate change through energy use and refrigerant emissions.
