In this project a study was made of the performance and cost of CO2 capture integrated into four different generic refineries:
- Base Case 1) Simple refinery with a nominal capacity of 100 000 bbl/d
- Base Case 2) and 3) Medium and highly complex refineries with nominal capacity of 220 000 bbl/d
- Base case 4) Highly complex refinery with a nominal capacity of 350 000 bbl/d
- Main focus was on post combustion capture with a solvent (MEA).
Refineries are characterized by the large number of stacks with flue gases of varying CO2 concentration and sulphur content. The stacks are distributed over the refinery area and if CO2 is to be captured from several stacks, several absorbers are needed and in some cases also a flue gas desulfurization (FGD) unit upstream of the absorber. The rich solvent from the absorbers is ducted to one single stripper.
Altogether 16 post-combustion CO2 capture cases were investigated for the generic refineries: 3 cases for Base Case 1, four cases for Base Case 2, 3 cases for base case 3 and six cases for Base case 4. Each capture case includes capture from between one and five stacks.
ReCap results
The Recap project has generated results that are presented in reports issued by IEAGHG, SINTEF and Amec Foster Wheeler.
- The core of the work done in ReCap is presented in the IEAGHG Technical report 2017-TR08 RECAP Project. This report consists of a summary followed by four of the below project reports.
- Technical Design Basis and Economic Assumptions (IEAGHG report 2017 TR5)
- Description of reference Plants (by Amec Foster Wheeler, included in 2017-TR08 above)
- Reference Plants: Economic Evaluation (SINTEF Report 2017:00320)
- Performance Analysis of CO2 capture options (SINTEF Report 2017:00220, included without appendices in 2017-TR08 above)
- Appendix A: CO2 capture process summary, PFDs and stream data (by SINTEF)
- Appendix B: Plot plan, utility PFDs and heat & mass balances (by Amec Foster Wheeler)
- Cost estimation and economic evaluation of CO2 capture options for refineries (SINTEF Report 2017:00222, included in 2017-TR08 above)
- Constructability Assessment (by Amec Foster Wheeler, included in 2017-TR08 above)
- Presentation of the ReCap project given by Rahul Anantharaman during the TCCS-9 conference
ReCap is a CLIMIT Demo project with additional funding from IEAGHG and Concawe. Amec Foster Wheeler has participated as subcontractor to SINTEF Energy Research.
